Adopt A Military Working Dog
The Military Working Dog Foundation, Inc. has dogs that need to be adopted.
From their site: “Thank you for your interest in our program. This program is on going at every military installation with military working dogs, all branches of the service. I am at program level of the adoption process. The training starts at Lackland and then the dogs are sent operational. Once they have completed their service they “can be retired”. At Lackland I do have some of the younger dogs, which have failed to complete training. The adoption law has a priority of adoption. 1st to Law enforcement agencies, 2nd to prior handlers, and the to the public. Please complete the application and return it to me. Contact me about the middle of each month to see if we have any dogs you might be interested in. An appointment will be scheduled for you to meet the dog and if you like them arrangements will be made for you to take them home. You will responsible for collars, leashes, crates, and shipment. The dogs are free of charge. Hope to here from you soon.”
To request an official application for a military working dog adoption, please use our form via this link.
Lackland Air Force Base also has military working dogs to adopt. From their site: “Thank you for your interest in our adoption program! We always have great dogs available with the majority of them being housed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio,Texas. Occasionally we also have dogs available for adoption
throughout the United States and some of our overseas locations. Most of our available dogs have failed to meet MWD standards while others have completed their service and are being made available for adoption.”
Be a Sato Escort
Who can be an escort? Anyone aged 18 or older, who is traveling on an American Airlines flight that either originates or connects in San Juan.
What does it cost to be an escort? Nothing! Save a Sato pays all the fees associated with transporting the dogs, though any contributions are gratefully accepted and put directly into helping animals.
Can I still check my own luggage if I am an escort? Yes, but it is helpful for us to know exactly how many bags you will be checking.
How does it work?
- Tell us your travel itinerary and we will ask our shelter partners if they can accept dogs on that date
- We will confirm with you that we are sending dogs on your flight–so please let us know immediately if your plans change
- On the day of your flight, we will arrive at the airport several hours before departure to check in the dogs and pay the fees: it is best if you arrive at least two hours before your time of departure
- The dogs will travel on your ticket as additional luggage
- PLEASE IDENTIFY YOURSELF TO OUR VOLUNTEERS–WHO WILL BE WITH THE DOGS TO THE LEFT OF THE AMERICAN AIRLINES CHECK-IN COUNTER (AND TO THE RIGHT OF THE SECURITY ENTRANCE TO THE GATES). OUR VOLUNTEER WILL ESCORT YOU TO A TICKET AGENT, SO YOU CAN SHOW YOUR PHOTO ID. YOU CAN DO THIS AFTER YOU HAVE FORMALLY CHECKED IN. YOU WILL NOT BE REQUIRED TO WAIT IN LINE AGAIN WITH OUR VOLUNTEER.
- On arrival, our partners will meet the dogs at baggage claim–the documentation travels with each dog, so you don’t need to wait for the shelter team
- You can feel great about helping some very deserving animals on the final leg of their journey to find a forever home
